Episode 46
Significance & the Replication Crisis
In the last decade, a controversy called the ‘replication crisis’ rocked the scientific community. The crisis centered around the fact that many scientific studies were difficult or even impossible to reproduce.
That had people questioning many scientific studies and, more broadly, the scientific process. At the heart of the issue is the question of statistical significance and whether we need to change the ‘p-value’.
One field that was hit especially hard is social psychology and that forced researchers in that discipline to start asking some very difficult questions. One such researcher is Professor Simine Vazire from The University of Melbourne’s School of Psychological Sciences in the Ethics and Well Being Hub.
In this episode, we talk to Prof Vazire about the crisis, the questions around significance, and the possible solutions that are being considered.
